ABOUT BEN ARPEA

Ben Arpéa is a French-Italian artist born in Paris in 1989. Coming from a family of art
collectors and dealers, Ben Arpéa grew up in a rich artistic universe and it is
therefore natural that he is passionate about art. Self-taught, he draws, paints and
invents from a very young age.
Ben Arpéa evolves towards a semi-figurative style. At the border of the real
and the fictional, his works represent imaginary landscapes including graphic forms
and architectural elements. Ben Arpéa immerses us in the interpretation of his
dreams, a frozen image of a moment, paying a contemporary tribute to the surrealist
movement of the twentieth century which advocated the power of the unconscious
and attributed to dreams a major role.
The place of dreams in his creations is that of a poetic experience that translates
onto the canvas through stretched forms and pastel colors, giving the whole a soft,
unreal and melancholic quality.
Ben Arpéa’s work begins with the selection of the elements of his canvas. Like a
craftsman, he chooses his medium – burlap, which he processes and stretches
himself, then wood for his custom framing. This important step for the artist is
inspired by the aesthetic concept of Gesamtkunstwerk (the total work of art),
originating from German Romanticism, which concerns the idea of combining
several techniques and disciplines in order to encompass the viewer in a utopian
work.
